The words below are from Jon
Andrews prior to completing
two 5ks on one Saturday morning in November. Jon is a youth pastor in
northern Indiana.
"I am spending some time the last few days wondering why?
Why would God pick a guy who
in his 41 years of life had never run more than a mile at one time in his
life, to sign up and train to run 6.2 miles in one morning and when this all
started in July could only run from one phone pole to next then walk for the
next 1/2 mile. Let alone a guy that weighed 347 pounds.
Why did God place a passion for those that
are hungry in his community in someone who has never truly been hungry? A
little known fact 1 out of 8 people in Elkhart County are in danger of going
hungry today.
Why place a burden in the belly of a guy from
small town Indiana for victims of sex-trafficking? Did you know that more
people are enslaved today then when slavery was legal in the U.S. ?
The fact that really is etched into my inner
most being is that of the 3 year old little girl who is trafficked because
some cultures believe that sex with a virgin will cure aids and s.t.d.'s.
The little girls are then stitched up and sold over and over again. Until
they themselves are infected with one of the death sentences themselves.
Here is why!
Because if God chooses the most unlikely
candidate to do something and it gets done only He can get the glory. I was
reminded specifically of Moses. Who God chose to do His speaking despite the
fact the he had speech problem. So tomorrow if I can run 6.2 miles without
walking it is and can only be a God thing and he will get and deserve all
the credit. I have never run more than 4 miles, and had never done that
until Tuesday.
Why a passion for the hungry of my community?
Maybe it's precisely because I have never been "hungry." I was blessed to
have been born in a family that was born in a country that has never felt
hunger pains that have kept me from sleeping. I have never had to not eat so
that my kids would have something. I have never had to tell my kids that
there was nothing to eat as I listen to the stomachs growl. I know this that
if I had ever been hungry and God had called some unlikely person to go for
a little run and collect pledges so that my family could eat, I would want
him too follow God's call.
Why sex trafficking? Why not? I remember the
night I first was burdened by trafficking. I could not sleep! I spent time
with God that night. He said this to me in an almost audible voice "Jon, you
have 2 choices. You can either go on with life as usual thinking 'that is
too bad' or you can actually do something about it." The thought of any of
my children having to endure that death sentence made me realize that I was
going to do something about it! If we can save just ONE child from
this HELL then l can state everything that my body will go through
for a couple of days will be worth it.
With your help we can do something.
Many of you have asked me the question "What can I do? I am
just one person" There is a famous quote that goes something like this.."All
it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to stand by and do nothing."
This is the time will you stand by and do NOTHING or will you stand with me
and do SOMETHING?"
